Did you know how it all started? 0n 2nd oct 1957, Prime Minister Nehru was watching a performance at Ram Lila Maidan near Red Fort Delhi . During the performance, a short circuit caused a fire to break out in the shamiana . Harish Chandra Mehra, a 14-year-old was among the audience. promptly took out his knife and ripped open the burning tent, saving the lives of hundreds of trapped people. This is how the journey of this award began . The first official National Bravery Awards were presented to Harish Chandra but that is a story for another day. Let’s fast forward to the winners of 2018 . Today’s story is about Gurugu HimaPriya and Soumyadip Jana:- Bharat Award Winners from Jammu HimaPriya was 8 years s old at the time of this incident. It was 10th February, 2018 , 5.15 a.m., heavily armed group of terrorists attacked the Sunjuwan Military Camp which included soldiers families staying there. The attack resulted in heavy damage and loss of lives. One heavily armed terrorist tried to enter the house of Hima Priya. She was a little girl but very strong. She and her mother tried to resisted the terrorist. After a great tussle, the terrorist threw in a grenade which led to multiple injuries on her left arm but still she remained calm. Her mother was injured and she fainted and fell down on the floor. Hima Priya very valiantly opened the door and stood in the way of the terrorist. She started a conversation with the terrorist “ Uncle , who are you and why are trying to harm us ?” The terrorist said ,” Get out of my way girl , I will kill you all”. She told him “ Uncle I am a small girl, what will you get by killing me and my family?” but the terrorist did not listen and put a gun on her head. Inspite of being held hostage, she continued conversing for three to four hours . She told the terrorist ,” Uncle you have injured by mother and she needs to go to the hospital. Please let us take her there.” After lot of convincing the terrorist agreed . She took her family i.e. her mother and 2 younger sisters away from the sight of terrorists and did not call out the rescue troops . This helped the rescuing troops to attack the militants without being caught . Her immense courage and spontaneous initiatives in standing up to the terrorist saved her family and preventing further loss of lives and limiting the casualties. For this bravery and courage she was awarded the Bharat Award in 2018. Soumyadip Jana Bharat Award Winner 2018 from Jammu This incident happened when Soumyadip Jana was 13 years old. It was early 10 February 2018, 5.15 am the Sunjuwan Military Station was attacked by a group of terrorists. Soumyadip Jana was staying in the residential block with his family. Hearing the bullet fire near the door, Soumyadip woke up . He told his mother ,” Ma, there is some attack by militants and they are firing bullets near our house. Let get into the other room fast”. Without caring for his own safety, he took his mother and sister into a another room and locked it from inside . Seeing the locked door the terrorist tried to break it open. But Soumyadip was smart. He knew that the terrorists might try to break open the door and kill them so he had barricaded the door with steel trunks and stood strongly against the trunks. The terrorists tried multiple times to break open the door but were unable to do it and got frustrated. One terrorist angrily said to the other,” This door is not opening but we will not spare them. Give me a grenade and I will explode the door “. Saying so he put the grenade and started firing from his AK 56 rifle. Soumyadip who stood guarding the door sustained multiple injuries in his head & body .The explosion and gunshots alerted the forces who were able to catch the terrorists.
