I plan to specialize in trauma surgery. My passion for this field developed while working in Ukraine at the beginning of the war, where I saw a high demand for trauma surgery and witnessed the unpreparedness of our trauma system. Ukraine’s trauma infrastructure was very weak, lacking fellowships and essential courses like ATLS. When the Ukrainian Ministry of Healthcare sought assistance from US medical organizations to implement the ATLS courses, I was inspired by US surgeons who risked their lives to come to Ukraine and share their knowledge. At the time, as a third-year resident in a small, understaffed Ukrainian hospital, I was privileged to join this initiative. I contributed to translating the first Ukrainian ATLS manual, helped implement training courses, and published our efforts in the World Journal of Surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Anderson. After working in Ukraine during the most challenging part of the war, I decided to continue my training in the US to become a fully trained surgeon. With a deep understanding of the Ukrainian healthcare system, culture, and needs, I see it as my mission to use my skills and knowledge to improve trauma services back in my homeland.
