I was inspired by my father, who was a well-respected urologist. Unfortunately, he passed away from a heart attack when I was 18 and a second-year medical student. I was touched by watching how thousands of his grateful patients came to our house on the day of his funeral to pay their last respects. In that moment, I realized the profound impact one surgeon can have on a community. The more I gained experience in surgery during medical school, residency in Ukraine, and my intern year here at Brigham, the more I fell in love with human anatomy, surgical technique, the atmosphere of the OR, and the privilege of taking care of surgical patients. While working in Ukraine during wartime, I felt the deepest reward of belonging to surgery. And now, for me, surgery is a mission through which I can take care of my patients, make a significant difference globally, and carry forward my father's legacy.
