Its not just the cost of being blind, its the cost of going blind, because thats what so many people not only in this disease, but in so many ocular and retinal diseases, face. The years of having to do these enormous treatments while suffering the anxiety of knowing theyre going to go blind. Thats horrible, horrible. Every minute youre blinking and looking to see if it got worse. Not only does it involve losing their sight, but its their psyche as well as their sight, because here theyve recovered, or are recovering from leukemia, but are facing the twenty four seven agony of ocular pain and deteriorating vision. They develop cataracts in many cases, and the cataracts cant be removed because their corneas cant tolerate invasive procedures. And so theyre facing going blind. AND theyre in terrible pain. Psychologically, as Katie put it, its suicidality.
