How would others describe your communication skills? I would explain it like this: my style is professional, where the main focus is on communicating with a human rights approach to support people’s dignity. I incorporate creativity, strategy, and teamwork in all scenarios. I have listening skills; it’s always important to know various perspectives to build strategies. • What development areas have been highlighted for you? (e.g., speaking skills, listening skills) I’ve been pointed out for my listening skills and then for how to respond to create strategic and assertive communication. Give me an example of when you had to explain something difficult to someone who did not have your background/knowledge Yes, of course. In human rights, it’s common to talk with victims and explain the importance of participating in certain campaigns. For example, with Jacinta Francisco Marcial, an Indigenous woman, I explained the need to highlight that she was in preventive detention for three years, being innocent, during a time when Congress was discussing a reform. I also emphasized the need for other people not to have to go through the same situation. She agreed to participate by using her voice and making a call to Congress. • What information did you need to get across? About the need to raise awareness that she was in pretrial detention for three years, despite being innocent, in a context where Congress was discussing a reform. And about the need to ensure that others don't have to go through the same experience. • What did you consider when explaining the concept? • • I considered it a technical concept used by lawyers, the importance of the event, as well as the fact that she was a victim of pretrial detention. Additionally, the relevance of the campaign was in highlighting the cases of people whose human rights had been violated. • What was the most difficult aspect about giving the explanation? • The technical aspect of what pretrial detention is. • • What would you do differently next time? Perhaps I would show other cases that have been covered in the media to explain myself better. Tell me about a time when it was important to involve someone in conversations In a campaign against sexual torture of women, it was crucial to involve two survivors. We knew their voices were key to raising awareness and helping to generate empathy and understanding in society. Their stories not only brought legitimacy to the campaign but also helped humanize the message and make it more impactful for our audience. Before involving them, I made sure they understood the campaign’s objectives and gave them space to express their own concerns. Why was it important to involve them? • • Their testimonies helped other women feel that they were not alone and that their voices could make a difference. Their stories added legitimacy to the campaign and helped combat the criminalization of tortured women. What kind of correspondence have you had to prepare in the past? Throughout my various positions, I have drafted formal correspondence, such as official letters addressed to government communication departments, civil society counterparts, international bodies, and media outlets. For example, I have been involved in the writing of press releases, institutional statements, and formal responses to inquiries or opinion pieces. I have also participated in the drafting and editing of human rights reports Always using inclusive language. • How effective is your writing technique? • I consider my writing technique to be quite effective, as I adapt the style and tone to meet the needs. I use a clear and concise approach, always incorporating inclusive language and human rights elements. • How could you improve the quality of our writing? • I could implement a team review process to ensure consistency in the tone and structure of communications. What experience have you had speaking formally in front of others? I have experience speaking formally at events related to media communication. Throughout my career, I have been responsible for giving press conferences, coordinating interviews, and delivering presentations to communicate key messages about human rights campaigns. • Describe a talk or representations which you have given recently? • • While working at CIMAC, I presented the results of a media observatory with a focus on childhood and gender, to a diverse audience including journalists and organizations. Last year, I moderated and participated in an analysis on the challenges faced by organizations of the Society of Jesus and social justice. Tell me about a time when you have chosen not to disclose information to others? A clear example was when we received a video at Centro Prodh showing a high-ranking official torturing possible suspects in the disappearance of the Ayotzinapa normal school students. It was decided not to release the video due to security concerns for the people within the organization, but also because the authenticity needed to be verified. A few days later, a journalist released the footage along with an investigation. • What are the main issues you considerer when deciding whether to share information with others? • First, it is important to assess the sensitivity of the information, especially if it involves victims or situations where human rights may be at risk. Confidentiality is paramount in these cases to protect the integrity and safety of the people involved. Second, I ensure that the information is verified and accurate before sharing it. Finally, I consider the confidentiality agreements established with the involved parties, such as governments, international organizations, and civil society, and whether sharing that information could violate those agreements. Tell me about a time when you have outlined the key point in an argument in the past. In the field of human rights and communication, I consider it essential to demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues, a solid grasp of the political context, and the ability to propose strategies with different possible outcomes. I had the opportunity to apply these principles while working with the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) on the analysis of the 'Cocula landfill' case. The team was about to present their expert report, which debunked the possibility that the disappeared students had been incinerated at that location, based on a thorough scientific evaluation. My role involved helping structure the message so it would be accessible, particularly for the media and social media followers. What did you do specifically that was effective? For the strategy, I explained the need to create explanatory visuals and glossary concepts for the understanding of the press. Besides summarizing the report, I also promoted a press release, developed products for social media, and arranged interviews with media outlets. What do you see as being the key to successfully putting an argument across orally? In the field of human rights and communication, I consider it essential to demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues, a solid grasp of the political context, and the ability to propose strategies with different possible outcomes. Give me an example of a situation when it was important for you to communicate a strategy or organizational objective clearly to others. In the Tlatlaya case, where Centro Pro obtained an order from the army to execute civilians in the dark, I worked on a communication strategy. First, I structured the key messages around two points: the importance of reforming military structures that allowed these kinds of human rights violations, and the need for justice for the victims. Given the sensitivity of the issue, it was crucial to ensure that the narrative not only exposed the facts but also humanized the victims, who were being criminalized. A detailed report was produced explaining the findings, focusing on the military orders that led to extrajudicial executions. • What did you do to prepare your communications? I analyzed the political context and the appropriateness and timing for holding a press conference. I developed materials such as a press release, visual content for social media, and arranged interviews with journalists. Clear communication was essential for all stakeholders to understand the gravity of the case and to commit to demanding justice.
