Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s The Physicists looks into four characters, all harboring false identities for their own purpose. Einstein and Newton, both pretending to be the physicists they are named after, harbor their false identities in order to gain knowledge over different concepts of physics to bring home to their countries for their own purposes. Mobius, pretending to see the ghost of King Solomon, does so in order to hide his intellect. Believing that his discoveries will lead to havoc throughout the world, Mobius decides his morals and keeping the world safe is more important than the fame and fortune that can come with his ideas. Finally, Doktor pretends to run her sanatorium as a way to help others, when really, she truly sees King Solomon and is using her sanatorium in order to exploit Mobius and his ideas. Every character has their own reasons for their deceit, connecting to the same arguments of the significance of intelligence within the real world.
