Jeremiah, the second of the four major prophets (together with Isaiah, Ezekiel and Daniel), is persecuted and imprisoned because of his harsh prophecies, and witnesses with great pain the fall of Jerusalem. He lived seventy-five years after Isaiah, and became a prophet at a time of profound corruption and moral decadence. Imprisoned because of his prophecies, which were judged too pessimistic. He witnessed the fall of Jerusalem in 587-586 BC at the hands of the Babylonians and was welcomed by the ruler Nebuchadnezzar. It was during the siege of Jerusalem that he wrote the biblical book of Lamentations, from which the text of the inscription that appears in the fresco is taken: … LAEBITUR VIRGO IN CORO … from chapter 31 entitled “Israel will return”, an excerpt from verse 13 whose full translation reads: Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance; the young men and the old men will be glad. I will change their mourning into joy, I will console them and make them happy, without affliction. The prophet – who occupies one of the two semi-pendentives – is represented as an old bearded man with a stern look, his head covered by a cloak and holding an inscribed slab in his left hand; at his feet we read HIEREMIAS, C. 31, with reference to the chapter of his book.
