According to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel had announced her departure from the world and her reunion with her crucified and risen Son. Thus, during the night, watched over by the Apostles who had miraculously arrived in Jerusalem from their places of mission, the Virgin succumbed to the sleep of death. Mary lay in the tomb until the third day, when, brought back by the Archangel, the soul of the Madonna was finally reunited with her body and ascended to heaven, in body and soul: this is the theme of the Assumption. The scene is dynamic; the apostles are wrapped in large cloaks and in a very plastic pose underlined by reflections of changing light. They appear amazed and perplexed, wondering about the event that is before their eyes; the majority of them are depicted in front of the tomb, with their backs to the observer.
