The subject of the Annunciation, canonically described by the Evangelist Luke, although set in different contexts – landscapes or architectures that in any case allude to Nazareth, where it took place – has as its essential elements the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel and sometimes the dove of the Holy Spirit. The moment represented is that of the arrival of the announcing archangel. The scene takes place in a room that is defined by few furnishings: a vase containing different types of flowers, a curtain, a precious and low wooden lectern, on which the Virgin, kneeling, shows a gesture of surprise with her right hand, distracted from reading the prayer book on which she appears to be concentrated. The angel suspended on a thick cloud indicates her with a peremptory gesture (Gabriel means “God is strong”) of the right hand while in the left he holds the lily symbol of purity. Her clothes are moved by the wind and suggest her sudden descent to earth. Behind her the cloud appears bright, perhaps the representation of the Holy Spirit.
