The Birth of Mary is a passage not reported in the Gospels, which refer to the Virgin starting from the Annunciation. From the 13th century onwards, literary sources are to be found mainly in the apocryphal Gospels and in the Golden Legend of Jacopo da Varazze. The scene takes place in a large room and shows in the background, on the right, the Virgin's mother, Anna, still lying in the large canopied bed, assisted by a midwife. In the foreground, little Mary is lovingly welcomed by a group of women, arranged around her, while they prepare the bath for the newborn. On the lower left, a water carrier completes the all-female scene, with the sole exception, in the upper register, of Joachim who enters the scene with his head bowed, illuminated by a beam of divine light.
