Saint Ambrose The holy theologian – of noble origins – is depicted seated in bishop's clothes wearing a cope, a mitre on his head and a pastoral staff in his right hand. In his left hand he holds a book resting on his leg, which alludes to his studies. Ambrose was born between 337 and 339 in Trier (now Germany), he moved to Rome to study Roman law and rhetoric, becoming a good jurist. In 370 he moved to Milan as governor. He found himself having to resolve the disagreement between Arians and Christians over the appointment of the new bishop, so much so that both sides nominated him for the same role. Initially he refused the title, but baptized in 374, he was consecrated bishop. He devoted himself to theology and moral renewal, and defended the rights of the Church against the Arian heresy. He died in Milan in 397.
