Saint Augustine The holy philosopher is depicted, together with the holy fathers and doctors of the church, Gregory the Great, Jerome and Ambrose, in a painted niche corresponding to the first register on the walls. The saint is seated in bishop's clothes wearing a cope, a mitre on his head and a pastoral staff in his right hand. In his left hand he holds a book resting on his leg, which alludes to his studies. Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (present-day Algeria) the son of a pagan and the pious Monica from whom he received a Christian education. He studied philosophy and rhetoric in Madaura and Carthage; while still young he lived with a woman, with whom he had a son. He taught in the cities where he had studied; he moved with his mother to Rome and Milan where he met Saint Ambrose who converted and baptized him in 386. In 388 he returned to Africa where he lived in a religious community; ordained a priest, he became bishop of Hippo, where he died in 430.
