UN SIGLO DE OBSERVACIONES TERMICAS EN SEVILLA: 1871-1970 JOSE JAIME CAPEL MOLINA* This is a study of the temperature patterns of Seville. For this work, one of the longest statistical series in Spain (1871-1970), which is found at the University of Seville, has been used. Seville has a unique thermal behavior within the Iberian Peninsula. Its average mean temperature of 19.1°C is higher than any other city on the Peninsula. Its high temperatures (average maximum, absolute maximum, and average) set it part from all the rest. The heat throughout the year is the most dominant characteristic, keeping in mind that in no month does the average temperature fall below 10°C and that for six months of the year (May through October) an average temperature above 20°C os registered. In Seville, during the summer, it frequently exceeds 40°C in the shade, and on very rare occasions it reaches 50°C. Such was the case on July 30, 1876 when the temperature soared to 51°C, the highest temperature known on the European Continent, coming close to two world records: 56.7°C in Death Valley (California) and 57.8°C in Azizia (Libya). Otherwise, Seville's strong average and maximum thermal oscilation (56.8°C) implies an extremely wide range of climate, despite its meridional situation, and due to its interior location, and its particular tendency towards hot weather.
